Nation’s hero arrested in a murder case

The man who brought laurels for the country in Olympics, 38-year-old Sushil Kumar, was on the run since the murder of 23-year-old national champion wrestler Sagar Dhankar following a brawl at New Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, have been arrested by the special cell of the Delhi Police. The police also arrested also his associate Ajay Kumar, who was also absconding, in the murder case.

“A team of special cell led by inspector Shivkumar, inspector Karambir and supervised by ACP Attar Singh has arrested two wanted persons, namely Sushil Kumar and Ajay (Sunil),” said Pramod Kushwaha, DCP, special cell.

As per preliminary reports, the  special cell team of Delhi Police arrested the national hero from the Jalandhar area in Punjab on Saturday night.

But today, while informing about the arrest of Sushil Kumar along with a co-accused Ajay Kumar, Delhi police said that they were arrested from northwest Delhi’s Mundka area, in a FIR No 218/ 2021 dated 05/05/2021 u/s 302/ 307/365/323/506/188/269/341/120 IPC and 25/54/59 Arms Act at Model Town, Delhi

The Delhi Police had announced a reward of Rs one lakh for information leading to the arrest of Sushil Kumar, who had since been on the run. Another reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for Ajay Kumar’s arrest.

He carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics. His 2008 Olympic medal was second for India in wrestling, and the first since Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav’s bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics In July 2009, he received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna – India’s highest honour for sportspersons. On 3 October 2010, Kumar handed the Queen’s Baton to Prince Charles in the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Sushil won the gold medal in the 74 kg division at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
