Old is Gold: Punjab’s oldest thermal plant exceeded expectations; generated highest ever power generation after 9 years

After a long pause, Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant (GGSSTP), Rupnagar is marching ahead with flying colours and breaking previous records in various performance parameters, inspite of shortage of manpower.

GGSSTP, Rupnagar is Punjab’s oldest thermal plant. It has achieved highest ever power generation in April to July during FY 2024-25 after 9 years. Previous best generation in these months was 1652.19 MUs during FY 2015-16 (with 6 units of 210MW each) and by beating this record GGSSTP generated 1812.88 MUs during FY 2024-25.

GGSSTP also has achieved highest ever plant load factor (PLF) of 73.71 percent upto July FY 2024-25 beating previous best PLF of 73.20 percent upto July FY 2014-15 after 10 years.

GGSSTP’s Specific oil consumption upto July in FY 2024-25 is 1.00 mL/kWh which is lowest ever since FY 2015-16.

Chief Engineer of GGSSTP Harish Kumar Sharma confirmed the same and said “ with the increase in demand, the plant run with full capacity and met the expectations of the state government. We are working with less manpower in comparison to 9 years when the plant had ample workforce.   ”

About GGSSTP

Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant (GGSSTP) is situated near village Ghanauli in Rupnagar district on Chandigarh-Manali highway. The first unit was commissioned in September, 1984. During March 1985, the second unit was commissioned and in later years four more units were added. The power plant is one of the coal based power plants of PSPCL.

The plant before 01.01.2019 has   an installed capacity of 1260 MW i.e. six units of 210 MW, however wef 01.01.2018 Units 1 & 2 of GGSSTP, Rupnagar have retired , as such the present installed capacity of GGSSTP, Rupnagar is 840 MW i.e  4 Units of 210 MW .
