On World Mental Health Day an interactive session organised by Psychology department of Punjabi University

An interactive session was organised by the Department of Psychology, Punjabi University Patiala to observe the World Mental Health Day on October 10.

The session focused on the theme “It is time to prioritize mental health at the workplace” and was attended by students, faculty members and employees of Punjabi University in large numbers.

Prof. Damanjit Sandhu, Head, Department of Psychology shared that the event has been organised to sensitize the community about the need to look into the mental health of employees at workplace as it is important not just for the well-being of human resources but also for the success of any organization.

The resource person of the event, Dr.Sukhtej Sahni (Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Author and life coach)conversed about the significance of maintaining work-life balance and compartmentalizing life so that various areas of life do not create unnecessary intrusion, stress and conflict within a person. He reiterated that the key to improve mental health is to express and have open ended conversations about how one feels and to nullify the stigma attached to it.

The guest of honour, Harmohan Kaur Sandhu Bubbu Tir (Member Punjab Public Service Commission and renowned poet} put forward the importance of working with honesty, dedication and courage and confronting one’s fears and circumstances with strong mind.  She emphasized on creating a healthy perspective towards life amidst all circumstances.

In her Presidential address, Prof. Narinder Kaur Multani (Dean Academic Affairs) appreciated the efforts of the Department of Psychology for this initiative and mentioned the need to overcome stress and relax ones mind through discipline in exercise or any activity that involves physical movement.

The theme of the event was presented by Prof. Sangeeta Trama and Prof. Harprit Kaur summed up the important take-home messages from the proceedings of the session.

The stage was immaculately handled by Dr. Inderpreet Sandhu. Dr. Tarika Sandhu and Dr.Sukhminder Kaur organised the logistics with the support of the research scholars, non-teaching staff and the students of the department.  Prof. D.P. Singh, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences presented the vote of thanks and appreciated the inclusive nature of the event while suggesting that we need to make daily efforts to take care of our mental health.
