Oncoplastic services started for cancer patients at AIIMS Bathinda

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bathinda is the first to start the reconstruction of oncosurgery patients. In a recent case a retd BSF employee was admitted in Surgical Oncology dept with diagnosis of Carcinoma mouth. The patient underwent surgery for the removal of the tumor. The whole of the tumor was successfully removed. Following removal of the tumor, reconstruction of the defect was done by the Plastic Surgery department.

A free flap was taken and placed over the defect with microvascular technique. The successful operation was conducted by Dr. Nikhil Garg, Dr. Jaspreet Shergill, Dr. Altaf Mir, Dr. Rajesh Maurya and team of anaesthetists. The patient recovered well. On this occasion Executive Director Dr. D.K. Singh encouraged the team, other supporting doctors, nursing staff and  said with the coming time more advanced operations will be done. Cancer patients who are diagnosed at an early stage will benefit from such surgeries in both stages for treatment and cosmesis.

Dean, Dr Satish Gupta, said that this is the standard of care for oral cancer patients and urged all the staff and faculty to offer best possible treatment options to the patients.
