Patiala Floods: PDA cheated us; Urban Estate, Chinar Bagh residents demand compensation from PDA

The residents of Urban Estate, and Chinar Bagh,Patiala have fully accused for the financial damage of crores of rupees due to recent floods, in this month, caused by overflowing Patiala river. The residents held a meeting yesterday and demanded that a survey should be conducted at the earliest and PDA (Patiala Development Authority)should pay the compensation to the residents, shopkeepers, businessmen etc . It has been resolved unanimously that as the PDA cheated the residents by establishing Urban Estate in the catchment area of Patiala river and the PDA should be sued in court .
In the meeting, held under the chairmanship of Manjit Singh Narang, a retired IAS officer of Punjab cadre, the presidents and secretaries of 10 association were present along with some other prominent residents . In the meeting it has been decided to constitute a ‘Core Committee’ to finalise the agenda which will be discussed in a meeting to be held next week .
The main demands , which were discussed in the meeting yesterday are to strengthen the banks of Patiala river ,escape channels of the river to be constructed to avoid floods in future ( it will help in recharging rain and flood waters), the heights of both banks of the river should of same height , all the obstacles in the course of natural flow of Patiala river be removed, more passages be constructed under the flyover of Southern bypass near urban estate, the level of street roads shouldn’t be raised while re carpeting, the sewerage and rain water drainage system to be restrengthen and PDA should prepare contingency plan with the consultation of representatives of these colonies .
The committee will approach the PDA and Punjab Govt to resolve the issues , mentioned above and if authorities fail to satisfy the committee a massive agitation will be started to press their demands.
During these floods many NGOs and villagers helped the flood victims . It was also decided in the meeting to honour these people to recognise their services during flood crises.
