Former President of the District Congress Committee, Ludhiana (Urban) and Ex‑Chairman of the Punjab Large Industrial Development Board, Pawan Dewan, has launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of an “abject failure” to curb the mushrooming of “illegal colonies” in Ludhiana. In a strongly worded statement, Dewan said that it is astonishing that Local Government Minister hails from Ludhiana, adding, “Yet illegal colonies continue to proliferate unchecked right under his nose.”
Dewan alleged that, flouting all norms, illegal colonies have mushroomed across Ludhiana and more continue to emerge, while Local Government authorities remain passive and merely a mute spectators. He castigated what he described as the ‘nonchalant’ and ‘irresponsible’ attitude of both the government machinery and the minister concerned, stressing that the administration’s silence amounts to complicity in the rampant violations.
Holding the present regime squarely responsible for haphazard urbanisation, Dewan argued that blatant violations of prescribed norms have become the order of the day. He pointed out that the government is losing significant revenue, as developers of unauthorized/illegal colonies evade legitimate fees, taxes and compliance costs. “This reckless urban sprawl,” Dewan warned, “is not only destroying the city’s beauty but also posing a potential threat to its long‑term sustainability.” He underlined that the unchecked growth of such colonies undermines planned development, strains civic infrastructure and erodes public trust in governance.
Dewan further emphasized that Ludhiana, Punjab’s industrial hub, deserves orderly and transparent growth rather than chaotic expansion fueled by negligence and political indifference. While urging the ruling dispensation to wake up from its slumber and act decisively before the situation spirals out of control, Dewan demanded immediate corrective action from the AAP government, calling for strict enforcement of rules, accountability of officials and a transparent mechanism to halt the rise of illegal colonies.
Asserting that Ludhiana’s future cannot be mortgaged to the greed of “unscrupulous developers” and the apathy of those in power, “Dewan said that only a firm crackdown on violators and a commitment to planned urbanisation can restore Ludhiana’s stature as a model city.
