To curb the menace of deteriorating air quality and increasing pollution level in the state, caused by bursting of crackers during marriage ceremonies, other celebratory functions, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, banned the bursting of crackers in the state. The ban is applicable on New Year eve parties also.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court issued these directions in the civil writ petition, titled as Court on Its Own Motion versus Chandigarh Administration and others as the bursting of fire crackers on these occasions increases the air pollution manifold.
The High Court had directed the law enforcing agencies to ensure the strict compliance of the orders, including State Pollution Control Boards. Punjab Pollution Control Board Chairman K S Pannu said that a public notice had already been issued in the newspapers informing the public at large that the bursting of fire crackers has been banned in the state by the High Court. ‘’Say no to bursting of fire crackers during marriage functions and other celebrations. Saving the environment is the fundamental duty of every citizen as is enshrined in the constitution of India,’’ he appealed to the people.
