Today, the power demand has crossed the alarming figure of 16836 MW at around 2:00 PM. A senior PSPCL engineer on the condition of anonymity said “with the rise in power demand , powercom has to impose power cuts to save the situation and to manage the demand below 17,000 MW-mark.”
The state’s electricity demand has soared in just last around one week. Due to prevailing weather conditions the demand remained under 11,000 MW. Growing daily the power demand 15,000 MW on Monday when it touched 15,640 MW. In around 3-4 days time 5000 MW power demand added .On Monday (June 9,2025) PSPCL supplied 3295 lakh units with maximum demand of around 15640 MW.
The sweltering heat sweeping across Punjab along with paddy load has pushed the state’s electricity demand to an unprecedented high. On Wednesday Tuesday , Punjab’s electricity demand soared to a record-breaking 16, 836 megawatt (MW), surpassing this year highest record 16,249 recorded on June 10 and of the previous year’s peak of 16089 MW recorded on June 29.

Last year, on same date the demand was 13,761 MW as compare to today’s 16,836 MW.
This spike, driven by relentless heat and the paddy sowing season, has put immense pressure on the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).
The drawing limit from the northern grid is 10400 MW and its own maximum power availability may be around 6500 MW under ideal conditions.
