PPCB gets first woman chairperson in five decades of its history

Today Punjab government has appointed Reena Gupta as the new chairperson of Punjab Pollution Control Board, PPCB. She is going to replace Adarsh Pal Vig, the incumbent chairman of PPCB.

Reena Gupta will be the 27th Chairperson of Punjab Pollution Control Board in its 5 decade long history.

DR Singal was appointed as the first chairman of the board and he remained for more than 4 years.

Out of 27, she will be the third active politician to be appointed as the chairman / chairperson in its 50 years of history. Earlier Rana KP Singh and Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa both MLAs were appointed as chairman by Congress government from 2003-2007 periods. Now, she will take the reins of the law enforcing board.

During its 5 decade long history several bureaucrats also remains its chairman. The first one who was appointed PPCB Chairman was Satish Chandra, IAS on April 12,2002 and remained  board chairman till January 20,2003. Than Rajat Aggarwal, IAS remained its chairman from November 3, 2009 to June 15,2011, KS Pannu, IAS from June 17,2011 to December 20,2011, Raminder Singh, IAS from December 22,2011 to December 30,2011, Ravinder Singh, IAS from January 3,2012 till December 29,2014, Manpreet Singh, IAS from December 29,2024 to May 15,2017, AS Miglani, IAS, May 17,2017 to June 27,2017, KS Pannu from June 29,2017 to July 20,2018.

Two renowned professors, academicians also remained its chairman. SS Marwaha (Ph.D) remained chaitman from July 20,2018 to July 19,2021 and the incumbent Prof Adarsh Pal Vig (Ph.D) from July 24,2021 to till date.

F Lal Kansal remained the longest serving Chairman of the board. He remained chairman from Aug 17,1987 to September 18,1990 , January 13,1992 to August 16,1993 and February 25,1997 to April 30,1999.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board was constituted in the year 1975 vide Punjab Government Notification No. 6186-BR II (4) 75/24146 dated 30.07.1975, after the enactment of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 to preserve the wholesomeness of water. Subsequently, with the enactment of other environmental laws the responsibility to implement the provisions of such laws was also entrusted to the Punjab Pollution Control Board in the State of Punjab.
