The Patiala Unit of Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association have demanded curtailing on the unwanted referral of Covid-19 positive and suspected cases from other districts especially from Ludhiana to Rajindra Hospital Patiala and has urged the Directorate of Health Services Punjab to intervene and issue strict orders to avoid such unwanted referral of patients.
In a joint press release, President Dr. DS Bhullar and General Secretary Dr. Darshanjit Singh Walia of the Association said unwanted referral of such cases not only causes a lot embarrassment to the relatives of the patients and the health staff but also financial burden on such referrals. At the same, the health care of patients already under treatment in the isolation ward of Rajindra Hospital is also compromised due to extra load of patients and in case of death of a patient, shifting of such dead bodies poses a lot of difficulties to the administration of both the districts along with relatives and delay in cremation of such dead bodies.
The association leaders have demanded that for referring such cases, the Civil Surgeon office of the concerned district should certify that such facility is not available in the hospital and that the patient requires medical aid from a tertiary care center as it has been brought to the notice of the Association that only the highly infectious patients like Covid-19, HIV, HBsAg positive cases are being referred to Rajindra Hospital Patiala which is a mischievous act on the part of the referring doctors avoiding treatment of such patients, said the leaders.
It is to be mentioned that Civil Surgeon Patiala has already written a letter to Director Health Services Punjab to issue directions to other districts to refer only those Covid-19 positive antenatal cases to Rajindra hospital Patiala which actually require tertiary level care as covid-19 antenatal cases are being referred to labour room of Rajindra hospital Patiala from other districts but there is already rush of such cases in Rajindra hospital.
