Punjab floods: Dam floodgates need not to be opened; situation under control

The monsoon that severely hit Punjab and Himachal Pradesh this month has brought cheers on the faces of Bhakhra, Dehar, Pong Ranjit Sagar Dam management. The water level in Punjab’s dam remains above, as compare to last year, this day. The inflow of water is also recorded high as compare to last year, on this day.

Today, the water level at Bhakra recorded is 1,622.5 feet while it was 1601 feet on July 5 , a week ago .The level has increased by 21 feet  in seven days. On Monday water inflow into the reservoir was 154000 cusecs. Bhakhra dam can hold water upto 1680 feet. The floodgates level is around 1650 feets.

The water level  at Pong on Monday was 1,357.5 feet against 1337 feet a week ago . The rise in water level 20 feet over last week’s  level . .The inflow of water on Monday was 236500 cusecs. The maximum height of Pong dam is 1390 feet and minimum height is 1260 feet.

At Ranjit Sagar Dam water level is 1712 feet (521.78  meters) while last week  it was 1681 feet (512.35 meters).The increase in water level in the last one week is 31 feet. On Monday the water inflow into the reservoir  was 150000 cusecs. Ranjit Sagar dam maximum height is 527.91 feet but permissible limit is at 524.91 feet.

“As per available figures this year due to heavy rainfall Bhakhra rainfall in the catchment area the water flow is increasing in the start of this month, otherwise the water level touches this level in the end of the July month” said an officer on the condition of anonymity.

All the thermal units in the state sector are closed on no demand. The maximum power demand on Monday was around 8000MW. On Tuesday morning, the weather was clear at most places in the region and this  improved the power demand to over 10000MW. The total generation from hydro  projects is around 800 MW. One unit of Rajpura thermal was shut on Sunday night after water entered the plant .
