Punjab gets new Advocate General (AG)

Finally, Punjab get its advocate general (AG), with consensus. The Punjab Government on Friday appointed senior advocate Deepinder Singh Patwalia as the state Advocate-General. The post had fallen vacant around ten days ago, after senior advocate APS Deol stepped down following attack by a member of the government that appointed him.

Patwalia is the son of former Supreme Court judge Kuldeep Singh and retired educationist Gurminder K Singh. He is the younger brother of Supreme Court advocate PS Patwalia.

Patwalia is considered close to PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. He had appeared for former Indian Police Service officer Mohammad Mustafa when he challenged the appointment of Dinkar Gupta as the state police chief after superseding him.

Punjab Cabinet had authorised CM Charanjit Singh Channi to select the new Advocate General (AG), the party leadership is learnt to had taken PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on board over the matter, as he is the one who objected the appointment of APS Deol as AG Punjab.

Senior Advocate Amar Preet Singh Deol was appointed as the new Advocate General of Punjab following Senior Advocate Atul Nanda resigned from the post of AG Punjab, in September, this year
