Kanwar Inder Singh/ February 15,2023

Manisha Gulati, a close aide of former chief minister of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh was appointed state women’s commission chairperson to the post in March 2018 by the then Congress government. An aide of Capt Amarinder’s MP wife Preneet Kaur, she joined the BJP at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Jalandhar just days before February 2022 assembly elections in the state.

The Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab had removed her as the state women’s commission chairperson from her post by withdrawing a 2020 letter that granted her a three-year extension on January 31,2023. Punjab additional chief secretary, social security and women and child development, Kirpa Shankar Saroj on Tuesday issued the order, stating that the letter dated September 18, 2020, that gave her an extension of three years as chairperson, was a “bonafide mistake”.

After this Manisha Gulati challenged the decision of the Punjab government to remove the chairman of the Women’s Commission in the High Court. She alleged that her tenure was abruptly curtailed through the impugned order dated January 31 by stating there was no power of extension under the Punjab State Commission Act and her period was extended by the government’s bonafide mistake. The HC had issue a notice to the Punjab government and sought its response.

After arguments in the case on Tuesday, state counsel sought time to take instructions in this regard.

On Wednesday ,the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab has revoked its order to remove Manisha Gulati as the state women’s commission chairperson.
