Punjab Police top heavy, forces it to post ADGP level officers to manage police ranges, previously managed by lower rank officers

Today, Punjab government has posted Mukhwinder Singh Chinna as additional director general of police (ADGP) Patiala range.

SPS Parmar, IPS is posted as ADGP Bathinda range and Naunihal Singh, IPS, ADGP is working as commissioner of police, Amritsar.

As per available information, there are around 39 officers of the rank of DGPs, Special DGPs and ADGPs in the state. Out of these 39, six officers are on central deputation. The sanctioned strength of ADGP posts are 7.

An official on the condition of anonymity said “senior officers are getting time bound promotions which has made Punjab police top heavy, whereas NGOs, middle level officers are still waiting for their promotions.”

In around June 2017, Capt Amarinder Singh led congress government had re-jigged the police administrative structure and Punjab government abolished all posts of four zones and posted inspector general (IG)-rank officers as heads of seven ranges in the state. These ranges were managed by DIG level officers and IG heads the Zone.

After that, all 8 ranges are managed by DIG/ IG level officers. Before today’s reshuffling, 4 DIGs and rest IGs were managing the ranges.

Punjab Police top heavy, forces it to post ADGP level officers to manage police ranges, previously managed by lower rank officers. Out of three, Amritsar commissionerate is managed by ADGP ranked officer and rest two- Ludhiana and Jalandahar are managed by DIG level officers.

In Punjab, Amritsar City, Jalandhar City and Ludhiana City have commissionerate system and rest of Punjab has 8 ranges having 2-4 districts in each range:

Border Range comprising Amritsar Rural, Batala ,Gurdaspur and Pathankot districts.

Patiala Range comprising Patiala ,Sangrur, Barnala and Malerkotla district.

Rupnagar Range comprising Rupnagar, S.A.S Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib.

Jalandhar Range comprising Jalandhar Rural, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala

Ludhiana Range comprising Ludhiana Rural, Khanna, Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar

Bathinda Range comprising Bathinda, Mansa

Ferozepur Range comprising Ferozepur, Fazlika,Tran-Taran

Faridkot Range comprising Faridkot,Sri Muktsar Sahib,Moga
