Punjab CM announces “Beadbi” Bill becomes law

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed that the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was passed unanimously by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, has been signed by the Punjab Governor
The bill, passed by the Punjab Assembly on April 13, 2026, provides for stringent punishment in cases of sacrilege of the holy scripture, including life imprisonment and heavy fines. The Chief Minister said the law is an important step to protect religious sentiments and maintain social harmony, adding that it will help curb sacrilege incidents and enable swift action against offenders.
Mann shared this information on his official social media account and said “Now this bill has become law. From a humble person like me, a billion-fold thanks to Waheguru ji for taking this service. Gratitude to the entire congregation.”
The Bill mandates a minimum imprisonment of seven years, extendable up to 20 years, along with a fine ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for desecration, while more severe penalties, including life imprisonment and fines up to Rs 25 lakh, are prescribed for sacrilege carried out as part of a conspiracy to disturb communal harmony.
