Punjabi University organized online training on ‘Fake News: Consequences and Remedies’

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Punjabi University Patiala organised an online training on ‘Fake News: Consequences and Remedies’ under Google News Initiative- India Training Network. The training conducted by Prof. Umesh Arya, Dean Faculty of Media Studies, GJUST Hisar, Haryana. This training was attended by nearly 50 students. Dr. Umesh Arya said that we must be vigilant about the information and messages received on Social media.

He said that with the help of technology we can easily learn how to debunk the fake news. With examples of various fake news cases he cautioned the students that when whole of the world is connected through internet and getting every sort of information through mobile phones, we need extra care and caution to check the authenticity of the messages.

Head of the Department Dr. Happy Jeji said that the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is regularly working on research and training in this field. She said that propagation of fake news on social media comes as a big challenge for our age and we need to be very cautious in this regard.

Dr. Nancy Devinder Kaur thanked Prof. Umesh Arya and all the students and research scholars present in the training. She said that in the times of misinformation and disinformation we need to redefine the various aspects related with media literacy.
