Eminent Punjabi scholar of Folklore studies Prof. Nahar Singh, former Head and Dean, Panjab University, Chandigarh is going to deliver his two lectures at Punjabi University Patiala. He has been invited by Department of Punjabi as Visiting Professor under a UGC sponsored scheme. First lecture on the topic ‘Philosophical aspects of Folk blief based Medicine’ will be on December 24, 2019 and the second one regarding ‘Methodology of field research in folklore’ will be delivered on December 26, 2019. Dr. Jaswinder Saini told that the contribution of Prof. Nahar Singh to Punjabi Folklore is enormous as he hasn’t just compiled the Punjabi folk songs of Malwa region rather he studied theoretically the ideological bases of Punjabi culture and folklore from the various perspectives such as Anthropology, Social Science and Psychology.  Publication Bureau of Punjabi University Patiala has published his ten volumes about various genres and forms of Punjabi folk songs. These books include Malwai Mardaan De Gidhe Diaan Boliaan (Kalia Harna Rohie Firna), Malwaina De Gidhe Diaan Boliaan (Long Burjiaan Wala), Malwaina De Lamme Gaun (Channa Teri Chaanni), Malwaina De Birhde (Khooni Nain Jal Bhre), Ghodiaan Suhaag (Baageen Chamba Khil Riha), Sithniaan Te Here (Rde Bhambiri Bole), Reetaan Rivajaan De Geet (Ma Suhagan Shagun Kre) etc. The department told that Dr. Nahar Singh will remsin in the department for a week and students can meet him informally  and discuss various issues and problems related to their research.

Prof. Nahar Singh is a stalwart figure in the field of Punjabi folk academics, who is born at village Fatehgarh Niuaan (Dist. Fatehgarh Sahib) on October 6, 1952 in the house of Ajmer Kaur (mohter) and Mr. Rakha Singh Aujla (father). After providing his great intellectual services to Punjabi University, Patiala as well as Panjab University, Chandigarh, he has been living in Toronto (Canada) these days.

According to Dr. Surjit Singh, HoD, Dept. of Punjabi, Punjabi University, Patiala, these lecutres will definitely be fruitful and beneficial especially to those students and researchers who have been working in the field of folklore. Any researcher or knowledge seeker, though they may not be concerned with Dept. of Punjabi, are also allowed to participate in these lectures, he further told
