The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education system and the students are not able to interact with professors in the traditional way on a regular basis. However, they need to be well prepared to face the competitive recruitment process after the completion of the degree. Implementing an innovative and alternative educational system and assessment strategies is the need of the hour.

Punjabi University has a brilliant placement record as most of the students are placed in reputed public/private sector organizations. Under the able guidance of Vice-chancellor Prof. Arvind, university is sparing no effort in preparing its students for a bright future in this turbulent time as well.

In this direction, an online mock placement test was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Punjabi University today. The test comprised questions from important subjects based on the latest trend and pattern followed by the IT industry during recruitment. The head of the department, Prof. Raman Maini said that following the Assessment for Learning (AFL) approach to teaching is important for pre- final year students, wherein feedback is created through such mock tests and then is used to improve students’ performance so that they give their best performance in the actual placements.

The mock test was coordinated by Dr. Gurjit Singh Bhathal and Dr. Gaurav Gupta. Dr. Brahmaleen Sidhu also supported the preparation and smooth conduct of the exam. Dr. Bhathal reported that over 200 B.Tech. pre-final year students appeared in the test and around 70 students scored more than 90%.Trushant Garg stood at the first position, scoring 93 %, and Malisha, Harish Bhatti and Rachit Kumar stood second scoring 92% each. Dr. Gupta added that students were evaluated for their technical, programming and analytical skills along with the core subject knowledge.

Through this test the students experienced a simulated setting of an actual placement test. A subject wise feedback was generated for all students that would help them to assess their preparation for the upcoming placement year. Dr. Maini informed that rigorous mock tests and interviews will be conducted continuously by the department.
