Punjabi university conducted surprise raids; issues show cause notice to 16 colleges

Continuing with the policy of zero tolerance against corruption in all forms including academic corruption, Punjabi university recently carried out surprise raids simultaneously on its 16 affiliated colleges and issued show cause notice to them for various malpractices including dummy admissions. According to the university officials, there had been various complaints against these colleges related to unqualified staff, non-attending students, dummy teachers, under paying the teachers, poor infra structure etc. and the raids were conducted to get to the bottom of the truth.
Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal, Dean Colleges added that for transparency, searchable information about all the courses, students and faculty in all the affiliated colleges had recently been uploaded on the university website from the database created by taking information from the colleges but these colleges had supplied dummy faculty data, as most of the teachers uploaded in the database by these colleges were found missing during the raid.
Five teams led by senior professors had conducted the raids and according to the reports submitted by them, no student or very few students were present in these colleges. The principal as well as majority of the staff members were also found missing in all the colleges at the time of raid. Most of the classrooms were locked and it looked no classes had been held for long and in one of the colleges even the college gates were found locked. One of the college was holding its classes in building of another college. In one of the girls college, a boys hostel was running in the same building as the girls college. The athletic track of one of the physical college was covered with undesired grass and weeds and the track and other sports facilities had been not in regular use for long. In one of the law college, no student of L.L.B. Course was present while a handful of students of B.A.L.L.B. course were being taught by two unqualified teachers, with one of them still doing M.A. In addition, no proper record of student and teacher attendance was maintained in any of these colleges.
