Punjabi University Environment Society celebrated World Environment Day

Punjabi University Environment Society celebrated World Environment Day by organizing plantation drive in Homi Bhabha Hostel for Boys.

The theme for 2024 is “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience”. Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, General Secretary of the Society introduced the theme and said that in this era of land degradation due to cutting of jungles, ground water depletion, and climate change are are major causes of land desertification and drought.

Prof. Keshav Singh, Department of Zoology, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh was chief guest on the occasion. He said that 75 percent of the Earth’s land surface has been significantly altered by human actions; including 85 percent of wetland areas have also been reclaimed that causes loss of invaluable biodiversity from this earth.

Punjabi University Environment Society celebrated World Environment Day

Prof. Ajita, President of the society said that global temperature is rising these days due to various anthropogenic activities and there is a dire need to plant more and more trees as they are natural ACs of the environment.

Students and other staff of the hostel also participated in the event.
