Kanwar Inder Singh/ royalpatiala.in
Prof. Arvind, Vice Chancellor Punjabi University Patiala launched refurbished and upgraded website (colleges.punjabiuniversity.ac.in) for the university affiliated and constituent colleges in the presence of Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal, Dean Colleges and Dr. Trishanjeet Kaur, Director Constituent Colleges.
The website has been enriched with detailed information about all the affiliated and constituent colleges of Punjabi university Patiala, including searchable information about all the courses, students and faculty in the colleges. According to Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal, the website which is the first of its kind for any Indian university will prove to be very helpful for students, college management, university officials, department of higher education and job aspirants. The summary information of all the 268 university affiliated colleges and 13 constituent college, including year of establishment, accreditation, contact, website link, faculty, courses, hostel availability etc. is now available on a single page on the website. For ease of search, the colleges can be filtered based on district, management type(government, aided, unaided, autonomous, constituent), education type (degree college, law college, education college), hostel availability, NAAC grade etc. A separate tab is available for viewing and searching the colleges based on more than 180 courses being by offered in the Punjabi university affiliated and constituent college. Students interested in taking admission in any particular course can view the list of all the colleges offering that course along with the seats allotted to each college and other details of the college.
Another unique feature of the website is the facility for generation of customized search lists in PDF format. Specific lists such as list of all unaided colleges of Patiala district along with contact number or lists of all education colleges with NAAC A grade or lists of all government colleges offering BCA course and having girls hostel facility etc. can be generated with click of a button by using this feature.
In addition to college and course information, detailed information about more than 5700 faculty members teaching in university affiliated/constituent colleges is made available in from of a database provided on the website. One can easily search for any faculty member by faculty name, subject or college name. Customized lists such as lists of all computer science teachers or Persian teachers can be generated in matter of seconds. The database has also proved useful in weeding out ghost teachers in colleges, as the system does not allow registration of a teacher in multiple colleges.
Vital statistics generated from more than 1.59 lakh students currently studying in the affiliated and constituent colleges of Punjabi university are also provided on the website. These statistics can prove useful for college management to know the trend about popularity of the various courses. For example, the statistics suggest that currently the seven most popular courses among students are B.A., B.Ed., B.Com. B.C.A., B.Sc. PGDCA and M A (Punjabi), while the B. Voc. programme which was introduced by UGC with the aim of providing adequate skills to equip students with appropriate knowledge, practice and attitude has failed to attract students. The statistics also reveal that only 10 out of the 268 affiliated colleges have more than 3000 students. The highest number of students are in Govt. Mohindra College (Patiala) followed by Khalsa College, Patiala and Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College Anandpur Sahib.
The website will also be a boon for job aspirants as the complete recruitment process for the colleges will now be conducted from this website. Dr. Lehal informed that it was usually observed that for interviews conducted by the private colleges to recruit principal and other faculty members, very few candidates turned up for interview due to lack of information and as a result many times the posts remain vacant. This problem will now be resolved as the website will serve as a single source of information of all vacant positions in Punjabi university affiliated colleges and all the notifications such as new vacancy, call for interview, result of interview etc. will be available on the website.
The website has been developed by Dr. Jasbir Singh, Dr. Tejinder Singh Saini and Dr. Ankur Rana under the guidance of Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal.
