Punjabi university organised webinar on literary relations between India and Uzbekistan

As per the guidelines of the Punjab Government, a webinar dedicated to the 400th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was conducted by Baba Farid Center for Sufi Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala on February 23, 2021.

The theme of the webinar was “Linguistic and Literary Relations between India and Uzbekistan: In the Context of Sufism”. The webinar started with the University Dhuni. Convener of this webinar was Dr. Mohammad Habib, Incharge, Baba Farid Center for Sufi Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala.

He gave information about the topic of the webinar and about Sufi Centre. Dr. G.S. Batra, Dean, Research, Punjabi University, Patiala, in his inaugural address, said that Sufism and Sufi literature have a very important place in the literary tradition which has played an effective role in the propagation of humanity. Sufism has a very close relationship with the land of Punjab. Prof. Ranjit Kaur, Dean International Students, Punjabi University, Patiala, welcomed the guests and listeners to the webinar. She said that the characters of Sufis are very high. Due to their character and simplicity, Sufis were popular among the common people.

The keynote speaker of this webinar was Dr. Shahid Taslim, Incharge, Uzbekistan Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He elaborated on India-Uzbekistan relations. He said that the land of Punjab was very great. Here Gurus, saints and Sufis gave a message to the people. India and Uzbekistan have had scholarly and cultural ties. He said that there are some things in common in our food and drink, rituals and customs. Some Indian words are commonly spoken in Uzbekistan. There are a number of documented records showing the cultural and literary ties between India and Uzbekistan.

He mentioned the famous associates of Uzbekistan who were also educated in India. He also spoke about the Sufis of Uzbekistan and their Kalaam. In the webinar Dr. Mohammad Idris, Head, Department of History, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr. Sheikh Jameel, Professor, Islamic University, Jammu Kashmir, Jasbir Kaur, Principal, Gurmat College, Patiala were the discussants of the Webinar.

Dr Jaswant Singh Puri also participated in the webinar.

In the end, Dr. Kesar Singh Bhangoo, Dean, Social Sciences thanked all the participants of the webinar.
