Punjab’s grandson announced as next Prime Minister of UK after he got the support of required MPs.
Rishi Sunak born 12 May 1980, is an Indian origin is the son of a pharmacist mother and a National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner (GP) father.
His grandparents were from Punjab and had migrated to East Africa for a better life. However, due to anti-Indian sentiment there, Sunak’s grandfather shifted to Britain. Sunak’s grandparents originated from British India but their birthplace Gujranwala lies in modern day Pakistan’s Punjab province. After the partition , his grandparents shifted to Indian Punjab from where they migrated to east Africa and then to Britain . Thus, in an odd way, the new British leader is both an Indian and a Pakistani.
“The Sunaks are a Punjabi Khatri family from Gujranwala, now in Pakistan,” tweeted one Queen Lioness 86, adding: “Ramdas Sunak, Rishi’s paternal grandfather, left Gujranwala to work as a clerk in Nairobi in 1935.”
Ramdas’ wife, Suhag Rani Sunak, moved to Delhi first from Gujranwala, along with her mother-in-law, before travelling to Kenya in 1937, according to Queen Lioness 86, who has provided all details about the family, including the migration of UL and the birth of Rishi in 1980 in Southampton.
Born in Southhampton, Sunak did his schooling at an educational institution in the UK and later graduated from Oxford University.
Rishi Sunak is a British politician is a member of the Conservative Party, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015. Sunak is a Hindu and as per available information took his oath as an MP at the House of Commons on the Bhagavad Gita.
Sunak was educated at Winchester College. He subsequently read philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) at Lincoln College, Oxford, and later gained an MBA from Stanford University in California as a Fulbright Scholar. While studying at Stanford, he met his future wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, the Indian billionaire businessman who founded Infosys. Sunak and Murty are the 222nd richest people in Britain, with a combined fortune of £730m as of 2022.
Sunak and Murty have two daughters. Sunak’s brother Sanjay is a psychologist. His sister Raakhi is the Chief of Strategy and Planning at Education Cannot Wait, the United Nations global fund for education
On 8 July 2022, he stood in the Conservative party leadership election to replace Borris Johnson.On 20 July, Sunak polled first amongst Conservative MPs, then competed in a vote of party members against Liz Truss. He in turn lost the Conservative leadership race to Truss, garnering 42.6% of the vote, and returned to the backbenches. Following Truss’s pending resignation amid a government crisis, Sunak is standing in the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election. On October 24, 2022 after former PM Boris Johnson withdrew from the campaign, Rishi Sunak become the UK’s first prime minister of first non-White Prime Minister of Britain.
