Punjab’s prestigious board silently turns 50; no celebrations held to commemorate Golden Jubilee foundation day

On July 30,1975, a board was established with a primary purpose to preserve the quality of water resources in Punjab. The government named that board as “Punjab Pollution Control Board”
Today, one of the prestigious boards of Punjab, “Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) established on July 30,1975 turns 50 years old.
But, to an utter surprise no function-at state level or at its head office at Patiala was held to celebrate the ‘Golden Jubilee’ celebration of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).
When contacted the member secretary of the board, Lavneet Kumar Dubey, he confirmed that “no function was held today to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).”
This year it’s not the first case when no celebrations are held to celebrate on the foundation day of any premier institution. Earlier Northern India’s oldest educational institute Govt Mohindra College, Patiala also turned 150 years on March 30 this year, but no official celebrations are held till date.

Recently Punjab government had appointed Reena Gupta as the new chairperson of Punjab Pollution Control Board, PPCB on May 19,2025.
Moreover Lavneet Kumar Dubey was also appointed the member secretary of the board on July 1,2025 after GS Majithia former member secretary resigned from the post, organisation after the appointment of new chairperson.
About PPCB
The Punjab Pollution Control Board was constituted in the year 1975 vide Punjab Government Notification No. 6186-BR II (4) 75/24146 dated 30.07.1975, after the enactment of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 to preserve the wholesomeness of water. Subsequently, with the enactment of other environmental laws the responsibility to implement the provisions of such laws was also entrusted to the Punjab Pollution Control Board in the State of Punjab.
Punjab Pollution Control Board has been entrusted the task of implementation of environmental laws in the State of Punjab.
Objective of Board
Control pollution at the source with due regard to techno-economic feasibility for liquid effluents as well as gaseous emissions.
Ensure that natural waters are not polluted by discharge of untreated city sewage.
Maximize reuse / recycling of sewage and trade effluents and to use the treated effluent on land for irrigation and for industrial purpose after appropriate treatment.
Minimize pollution control requirements by judicious location of new industries and relocation industries wherever necessary.
The functions are directed towards the effective control of water and air pollution and to maintain and restore the quality of water for various designated uses and of air.
