Pyarelal Wadali dies,setback to Sufi Music
Wadali Brothers,Ustad Puran Chand Wadali and Ustad Pyare Lal Wadali needs no introduction as the duo were an icon of Sufi singing.
But today Ustad Pyarelal Wadali alias Pyarelal, younger brother of Puran Chand Wadali of the Wadali Brothers fame, died due to cardiac arrest in Private hospital in Amritsar. He was born in 1942 and died at 75 years of age. His father was Thakur Dass. He breathed his last at Amritsar’s Fortis Hospital where he was admitted.
He was and his elder brother Ustad Puran Chand Wadali is a fifth generation of musicians who were singing sufi songs.His father was Thakur Dass.
Wadali Brothers, who hail from a village Guru Ki Wadali, near Amritsar, are famous for their Punjabi Sufi music. This is the same village where Sixth Guru of Sikhs Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was born.
He along with his elder brother Puran Chand Wadali first performed at All India Radio in the year 1972. The duo began performing at Harballah temple in Jalandhar. The Wadali Brothers, Puranchand Wadali and Pyarelal Wadal have carried on the legacy of famous saint poets such as Bulle Shah,Amir Khusro,Surdas and Kabir. Ustad Puran Chand Wadli was trained in Hindustani Music by Pandit Durga Dass of Patiala Gharana and Ustad Badde Ghulam Ali Khan.
Pyarelal Wadali used to play the role of Krishna in the village rasleela to get some monetary help his family meager income. Both Wadali brothers were regular in Akhara for 25 years.The wadali brothers never went to school or have any formal education. They lead a very simple life. They performed live at USA,Canada, England, Dubai, Pakistan, Singapore and other countries.
Later the Wadali Brothers, also sung in Bollywood movies and some of their songs are super hits. Wadali Brothers always use to say that “Folk and Sufi music are like truth. It will never die.”
