Rajiv Gandhi law university organizes multidisciplinary congress on rights of transgender community

The School of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab organized 6th RGNUL Multidisciplinary Congress on Rights of the Transgender Community on 9st March, 2021.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Anand Pawar, the officiating Vice-Chancellor of RGNUL. The Convener of the Conference was Dr. Shveta Dhaliwal, Faculty coordinator SSSIS, and the Co-convener of the conference was  Lovepreet Kaur, Assistant Professor, Dept of Law.

The conference witnessed an enthusiastic response from students, scholars, academician from the institutions like University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, National Law University Jodhpur, O.P Jindal Global University, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, Symbiosis Law School, NIMS University, Jaipur, Christ University etc.

Highlighting the theme of the conference, the papers discussed various aspects of Rights of the Transgender community through specific laws and constitutional provisions as well as the changing perception towards gender and gender identity.

The conference was conducted through five parallel sessions. The sessions were conducted through a web conference platform. The first session was chaired and co-chaired by Dr. Rachna Sharma and Ms. Jasmine Kaur. The second session and third session were chaired by Dr. Sangeeta Taak and  Sachin Shrama respectively. The fourth session was chaired by Dr. Ashish Virk and the last Session was chaired by Dr Jasleen Kewlaini. The first session highlighted the human rights of transgender community and LGBTQ+ community while the second and fourth session discussed transgender rights with reference to specific laws and issues. The third session was themed at changing perceptions towards the transgender community and the fifth session discussed the idea of gender non-conformity along with constitutional provisions.
