Rare event: Punjab’s decorated SSP given warm send off on transfer. Yesterday Gurmeet Singh Chuhan, a decorated and a well known Punjab police IPS officer has been transferred due to political pressure. He is instrumental in controlling drugs-terror nexus, curbing drug menace, terrorist activities, illegal sand mining etc.
As per available information he has been transferred for booking MLAs brother-in-law in illegal sand mining case. The controversy erupted after the police claimed to have arrested Nishan Singh of Khawaspur, who is the brother-in-law of AAP MLA from Khadoor Sahib, Manjinder Singh Lalpura.
Nishan was among 10 persons arrested for alleged illegal sand mining during a special raid by the CIA staff of Tarn Taran police on September 26,2023 night. According to the police, around 10 tipper trucks three of them with sand) ,an excavator , motor cycle, an Innova were recovered from the spot and the mining operation was being operated by one Avtar Singh with the help of Nishan. A case under IPC and the Mining Act had been registered at the Goindwal Sahib police station in Tarn Taran district.
A day before his transfer, AAP MLA from Khadoor Sahib, Manjinder Singh Lalpura, alleged that Chauhan had implicated his relative in a false case of illegal mining, a charge that had been clearly denied by the senior police officer.
Lalpura challenged SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan on FB after the police busted an illegal mining racket and arrested 10 persons, including brother-in-law of the MLA. Lalpura had alleged that his brother-in-law was implicated in a false case in a preplanned conspiracy. He alleged that the SSP had taken ‘revenge’ from him as he had flared up the issue of corruption in Tarn Taran police a fortnight ago.
Lalpura went on to claim that the SSP was pressuring someone to implicate him in a case, stating, “I have also come to know that you are forcing someone to name me in a case. I welcome the fake case registration against my relative. Only a coward uses a proxy to take on the enemy. You keep your uniform aside, and I’ll keep my MLA’s chair aside, then we’ll see who wins. Moreover, even today, I will repeat that nothing works here without bribing the Tarn Taran police…But we won’t pay bribes and will still get the work done.”
