Renowned orthopedician Dr Walia honoured with prestigious Award for Excellence in Orthopedics and Social Service

Dr. J.P.S. Walia, former Professor and Head of Orthopedics at Government Medical College, Patiala, and currently the Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Member of the Administrative Committee, and Medical Superintendent at Aggarsain Hospital, Patiala, has been awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna Dr. Abdul Kalam Gold Medal by the GEPRA Association, New Delhi. The award ceremony took place in Chennai, recognising Dr. Walia’s exceptional contributions to the field of orthopedics and his dedicated social service.
With over 40 years of experience in orthopedics, Dr. Walia has made significant strides in medical research, authoring 100 national and international papers. For the past decade, he has been offering honorary services as the Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon at Aggarsain Hospital, Patiala, where he has tirelessly served the underprivileged and general public of the region.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Walia has held several esteemed positions, including President of the Punjab Orthopaedic Association, President of the North Zone Orthopaedic Association, and Chairperson of the Punjab Medical and Dental Teachers Association. His leadership and contributions have been widely recognised, earning him the Punjab State Government Award in 2005 and the Shri Guru Nanak Dev Achiever Award in 2019.
Beyond his medical achievements, Dr. Walia has been actively involved in social and cultural activities. He has served as the Honorary Secretary and later as President of the RGMC, Patiala, for three consecutive terms from 2013 to 2020. Under his leadership, RGMC Patiala saw significant developments, including the introduction of a prepaid card system in 2014, the construction of 12 guest rooms, and the clearance of a long-pending house tax without imposing additional charges on members.
Dr. Walia’s dedication to the development and welfare of RGMC Patiala has elevated the club to one of the top three renowned clubs in India, a testament to his collective efforts alongside his executive committee and the cooperation of RGMC’s honourable members.
Renowned orthopedician Dr Walia honoured with prestigious Award for Excellence in Orthopedics and Social Service. In addition to his professional and social endeavours, Dr. Walia has a rich history in sports and cultural activities. He captained the Punjabi University Bhangra Team in 1974-75 and participated as a Bhangra artist in the 9th Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982, as well as in several Punjabi films. He was also awarded a B-grade certificate by the Punjab Government’s Sports Department and received the Role of Honour from Government Medical College, Patiala.
Dr. J.P.S. Walia’s lifelong commitment to orthopaedic excellence, social service, and cultural enrichment continues to inspire many, making him a deserving recipient of the Bharat Ratna Dr. Abdul Kalam Gold Medal.
