The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar )and the District Bar Association (DBA)Rupnagar held a joint press conference and strongly opposed the reported move to accord district status to Sri Anandpur Sahib, questioning whether creating a new district solely for political gain is in the best interest of the people and the state.

Speaking at the Rupnagar Press Club, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar ) National Secretary Kushalpal Singh said that the government is seeking to get political mileage by creating a new district on the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, while the state is already facing an economic crisis. Anandpur Sahib needs infrastructure development. The Sirsa River is becoming polluted. Governments have already created twenty-three districts from twelve since 1972. The government is increasing expenditure, while the quality of governance has declined.

He said that the government should implement the need to reduce districts if necessary. The government was unable to build the Garhshankar -Anandpur Sahib road, and the road was constructed through Kar Seva.
