Shiromani Akali Dal core committee decides unanimously to pull out of the BJP-led #NDA because of the Centre’s stubborn refusal to give statutory legislative guarantees to protect assured marketing of crops on #MSP and its continued insensitivity to Punjabi and #Sikh issues.” tweeted Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal, while parting away from BJP.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday night broke alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), after the committee decides unanimously to pull out of the BJP-led #NDA. SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal  and father of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal is among the main founder members of the NDA. The Akali-BJP alliance had contested elections in Punjab together for three decades.

Earlier on September 17, the SAD’s lone representative in the Union Cabinet, Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned in protest against the Bills. Badal in her resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wrote, “In view of the decision of the Government of India to go ahead with the Bill on the issue of marketing of agricultural produce without addressing and removing the apprehensions of the farmers and the decision of my party, the Shiromani Akali Dal, not to be a part of anything that goes against the interests of the farmers, I find it impossible to continue to perform my duties as a Minister in the Union Council of Ministers.”

Former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra said the SAD was forced to first leave the Union Cabinet and now the NDA as the BJP-led alliance was obstinate and stubborn over bringing the farm legislations despite protests by farmers, opposition and the Akali Dal.

The pressure to quit the NDA alliance had been mounting on the SAD, following farmer anguish over the Bills. The SAD initially supported the farm ordinances but later took a U-turn on the issue. Many senior party leaders have even cautioned the party leadership over possible backlash that the party would have to face over the issue.
