Second longest serving SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar is no more

Former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar died at 78 at the Fortis Hospital in Gurgaon on Friday evening.
Avtar Singh Makkar , who was SGPC president from November 23, 2005, to November 4, 2016, had been reportedly unwell for the past few days, and was admitted to Fortis hospital in critical condition on December 16,2019.
As per family members he had liver problem , heart problem and other problems. But he died due to cardiac arrest .The family will bring back the body from Gurgaon to Ludhiana and he will be cremated at Model Town cremation ground in Ludhiana on Saturday between 1-2 PM.
He is not feeling well since when a tragedy struck him following death of his son Manvinder Singh Makkar, 47, in February 2017.
Avtar Singh Makkar Born into a Arora Sikh family, He was elected as the 39th president of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) – the mini-parliament of Sikh religion. He is a retired Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) officer belongs to Ludhiana and was a senior vice president of the SGPC. He was also remained president of Ludhiana (shiromni akali dal badal) in year 2002
He was the first person who publically drops his surname “””Makkar””” which shows unity in sikhism. He said using caste as surnames is violation of sikh rehat maryada as he said that sikhism does not support casteism. Guru Gobind Singh gave one caste one surname to all that’s Singh,
He has his own school named Guru Gobind Singh Public School in Ludhiana, at present he is also a member of political affair committee shiromani akali dal badal.
