Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib observed World Environment Day 2025 with a vibrant week-long series of activities under its World Environment Day – Pre Campaign 2025. The initiatives, aimed at fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainable living, engaged students, faculty, and the wider community in meaningful and impactful ways.

The campaign commenced with a Cleanliness Drive, focusing on the removal of single-use plastic waste from the university campus and surrounding areas. The initiative sought to educate participants on the dangers of plastic pollution and emphasized the pressing need to reduce and eliminate plastic from daily life.

Furthering its sustainability efforts, the University organized a Workshop on Paper Bag Making. The hands-on session equipped students with the skills to create reusable paper bags, promoting the use of eco-friendly alternatives and encouraging sustainable consumption habits.

In a bid to green the campus and contribute to biodiversity, a Plantation Drive was also held. Higher officials, faculty members, and staff came together to plant ornamental trees, symbolizing the University’s ongoing commitment to enhancing green cover and combating climate change.

Creativity and advocacy took center stage with an Online Photography and Slogan Writing Competition. Students submitted striking images of nature and powerful, thought-provoking slogans, all echoing the theme of environmental conservation.

The culmination of the campaign was marked by a compelling Invited Talk by Dr. Ravneet Kaur, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Her talk on “Assessing Microplastic Pollution in Sutlej River: A Call to Refuse and Not Just Reduce”, addressed the alarming presence of microplastics in regional water bodies. Dr. Kaur urged participants to adopt lifestyle changes that go beyond reduction—advocating for outright refusal of plastic use—and highlighted the environmental and health hazards posed by microplastic contamination.
