Sustainable Waste Management: Material Recovery Facility and Plastic Recycling Facility inaugurated in Patiala

Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) and SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited jointly organized the inauguration of 10 TPD Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Plastic Recycling Facility (PRF) at Focal Point Industrial Area, Patiala, Punjab.
These facilities are developed under Project MASS (Mantra for Advance Sustainable Solution), a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited, being implemented by IPCA since 2021.
The plastic recycling facility is second such facility established under MASS, following their first recycling plant in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The PRF is the first of its kind in the city, will play a crucial role in reducing plastic waste from reaching landfills and contributing towards sustainable waste management. Under MASS, the focus is on developing the supply chain for low commercial value plastic waste along with implementation of decentralised waste management system at gated societies. Dissemination of awareness on source segregation and capacity building of waste workers are among the key components of the project.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by esteemed guests, including Aditya Dachalwal, IAS, Commissioner, Patiala Municipal Corporation, Pawan Sharma, SDO, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Ashish Jain, Director, IPCA, Ajay Garg, Secretary of IPCA and Dr. Radha Goyal, Deputy Director, IPCA. Their presence highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling waste management issues and promoting sustainable practices.
IPCA, with its more than two-decade-long legacy, has been working with key stakeholders including policy makers, Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), corporate, waste workers, residents, recyclers and co-processors across various states in India to systemize waste management systems.
In addition to this, IPCA assists residential societies and educational institutions in segregating organic waste at source and converting it into manure, advancing the goal of achieving zero waste status through Aerobin Composters. The new facilities in Patiala are a significant milestone in transforming societal behaviour towards waste management and encouraging a circular economy. MRF establishment and decentralized wet waste management are being implemented by IPCA in collaborative support from the Patiala Municipal Corporation (PMC)
Addressing the event, Ashish Jain expressed his heartfelt gratitude to PMC, Punjab Pollution Control Board, and SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited for supporting its on ground implementation. Briefing about the features of project MASS, Jain emphasized on the pressing need to streamline the collection and recycling the low commercial value plastic waste in the country. A live demonstration of the chip boards manufacturing through low commercial value plastic waste was also led by Ashish Jain.
