The Spring Festival begins at Guru Nanak Dev University

The Spring Festival of Flowers, Plants and Rangoli was started here today in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan premises of Guru Nanak Dev University. This festival is being organized by Department of Landscaping & Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of the University at National level to create awareness among youth about nature on the guidelines of Vice – Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu. Apart from flower lovers, a large number of competitors are participating in various events relating to flowers, ornamental plants along with cacti and succulent plants including Rongoli with flower petals and artificial material. Prizes shall be distributed among winners while participation certificate shall be given to all participant in this flower show and rangoli competitions.

Dr J.S. Bilga Consultant Horticulture said that warm response of flower lovers was received and as many as 492 entries has been received which will divided into various categories of Flowers, Plants,  Cacti etc. He said that this exhibition is open for all from nine to five pm.  Guru Nanak Dev University Invites all flowers lovers, nature lovers and environmentalist. He said that the objective of this fest to associate students with nature and to promote floriculture and plantation in the society.

Gurwinder Singh Landscape Officer said that in this festival the entries of various types of flowers, cacti, ornamentals etc were received from individuals, institutions, colleges and schools. He said that on the very first day of the fest, a large numbers of students and other public visited the University during this fest.

Dr. J.S. Bilga said that different varieties of flowers like Aster Antirrhinum,Dahlia,  Marigold,  Pansy, Petunia, Stock Salvia and Seasonal & other flowers were displayed. In the category of Foliage /Ornamental plants, Aglaonema, Asparagus, Coleus Crotons, Dieffenbachia, Dracaena, Ferns, Ficus, Palms and Foliage Plants are included in the festival. In Cacti and Succulents category, Cacti Grafted, Cacti Non-Grafted, Succulents etc and Bonsai &, Ornamental Plants are exhibited. The Rangoli with flowers and Rangoli with artificial materials is the important part of this festival. Apart from this a large number of stalls of nurseries, equipment’s of gardening, flower pots and stalls of hygienic & organic eatables other decorative materials relating to gardening are on sale. The winners would be encouraged and awarded on the basis of judgment by experts on the third and final day of the show.
