Today, prime minister of India Narendra Modi gave a surprise Gurpurab gift to the nation that the Centre will repeal all three farm laws and requested the protesting farmers to return back to their homes.

This comes almost one year after farmers sat in protest against the three controversial legislations in Delhi and across the country. The prime minister said that the laws will be repealed by the end of the month in the Winter Session of Parliament.

“The three laws were in the benefit of farmers but we could not convince a section of them despite our best efforts”, the PM said, adding that he was not laying the blame for this on anyone on an auspicious day.

The agriculture budget has risen by five times with over Rs 1.25 lakh crore being spent annually, Modi said. He also highlighted his govt’s measures to benefit small farmers. “I have experienced farmers’ difficulties, challenges from very close quarters in my five decades of public life,” the prime minister said.

The announcement comes on Gur Purab, when Sikhism founder Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary is celebrated. The stunning announcement came just ahead of the Punjab Assembly Elections scheduled to take place early next year.
