UP Discoms privatisation strike on July 9 may affect power supply- AIPEF

Electricity supply in the country may get affected on July 9 as power workers have planned a nationwide strike against the government’s decision to privatise two distribution companies (Discoms) in Uttar Pradesh, said Shailendra Dubey   All India Power Engineers Federation Chairman .

National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE)  held its meeting at New Delhi and was attended by   All India Power Engineers Federation Chairman Shailendra Dubey , ,  Abhimanyu Dhankar,  Mohan Sharma, Sudip Dutta,  RK Sharma, A Sekijar,  Subhash Lamba, AK Jain, Yashpal Sharma , Satyapal and others.

Dubey alleged that Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd and some big officials of the government are in collusion with selected private houses. They want to sell Discoms assets worth lakhs of crores to private houses at throwaway prices.

It has been  decided in the meeting that as soon as the tender for privatization of electricity in Uttar Pradesh is done, 27 lakh electricity workers of the whole country will go on a one-day symbolic strike. It was also decided to hold demonstrations on July 2 as a warning before going on a strike. It may be mentioned that  the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to privatise two power distribution companies  covering  42 of 75 districts of the state.

The NCCOEEE  has demanded from the central government that in the larger interest of farmers, common domestic consumers and poor consumers, the government should immediately intervene and cancel the process of privatization of electricity going on in Uttar Pradesh.

The national office bearers of the NCCOEEE will participate in the Maha Panchayat of farmers, common domestic consumers and electricity workers being held on 22 June in Lucknow where a  decision will be taken in  to launch a decisive mass movement against the privatization of electricity.

V K Gupta informed that the electricity workers of Uttar Pradesh are protesting for the last 194 days continuously against privatization and suppression of employees, contract workers, junior engineers and engineers by the Power Corporation management. NCCOEEE   warned that if the suppression of electricity workers does not stop, then all the 27 lakh electricity workers of the country  will be forced to protest against it in a democratic manner, the entire responsibility of which will be of the Uttar Pradesh government.
