Vice Chancellor released a book Tree and Shrubs of Amritsar

Prof. (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University released a book “Trees and Shrubs of Amritsar: A Pictorial Field Guide” authored by Prof. (Dr.) Avinash Kaur Nagpal and her four Ph.D. students, Dr. Gurveen Kaur, Dr. Jaskirat Kaur, Dr. Akanksha Bakshi and Ms. Nitika Sharma of the Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences.

Prof. Sandhu appreciated the book and congratulated authors for meticulously utilizing simple language, common plant names, and vibrant photographs of the plants and their various parts. He remarked that the guide is accessible to a broad audience, extending its utility beyond botanists to anyone with an interest in nature.

Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal informed that this book documents 100 species of trees and shrubs growing along the roadsides, in public gardens, parks, educational institutes; and residential, commercial and industrial areas of the holy city, Amritsar. The main objective of the book is to aid botanists with complete botanical description about trees and shrubs, including accepted botanical names, etymology of botanical names, current IUCN conservation status, flowering and fruiting times etc.  At the same time, this pictorial field guide will be useful for urban planners, policy makers and administrators for selection of trees and shrubs for landscaping. Prof. Nagpal further explained that though the book covers basic information about different species of trees and shrubs growing in the Amritsar city, however, many of the species are also found in other parts of the country and the globe. Also, number of the species covered in the book are exotic.  Hence, it would definitely be useful across the globe as many of trees and shrubs covered in this book are also found elsewhere.

Prof. Rajinder Kaur, Head, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, said that the book will acquaint common public about woody plant wealth of the city along with their uses and colourful pictures of different plant parts will be a great help in identification of plant species.

Vice Chancellor released a book Tree and Shrubs of Amritsar. Prof. Palwinder Singh, Dean Academic Affairs and Prof. Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi, Dean Students’ Welfare graced the occasion with their presence and congratulated the authors for their wonderful contribution in the field of plant sciences.

According to Prof. G. S. Virk, the book can entice the endearment for trees and shrubs amongst all readers.  He said that the book will serve as a guide for students of botany at different levels. Prof. Jatinder Kaur offered vote of thanks to everyone present on this occasion.

Prof. Saroj Arora, Prof. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Prof. Manpreet Singh Bhatti along with other faculty members and research scholars of the department were also present.
