On the call given by the Indian Medical Association, the medical fraternity across the state, under the aegis of Indian Medical Association  (IMA), Punjab, kept the OPDs at their respective hospitals shut , raised slogans to express their ire and submitted memorandums to the Deputy Commissioners and SSPs for forwarding further to the Prime Minister and Home Minister, urging them to initiate immediate stern action against the abettors who are behind the heinous case of suicide by Rajasthan based Dr.Archana Sharma.

Giving details, Dr.Paramjit maan, IMA state president, said that not only the unscrupulous elements had vandalised the hospital of Dr.Archana Sharma accusing her of responsible for the natural death of the patient despite her sincere efforts but the police in grave violation of the apex court’s directions had registered FIR against her , thus causing her mental agony ultimately forcing her to take the extreme step.

The IMA would not relent and further intensify the stir till the initiation of stern action against the persons responsible for abetting the crime against the doctor who had been putting in best of her services to save the life of the patient, further added Dr.Maan.

The IMA action was spurred by the death of Archana Sharma, a gynecologist from Dausa in Rajasthan, who died of suicide on March 30 after a murder case was registered against her following the death of a woman patient in her care.

The medical practitioners demanded action against the police officers who booked the murder case against the doctor, adequate compensation for Dr. Sharma’s family, legislation to stop violence against doctors, changes in the Indian Penal Code to de-criminalise the medical profession, exemption from Consumer Protection Law and capping of compensation.

In Patiala, the protest and candle march procession started from children memorial chowk to fountain chowk. Patiala (Rural) MLA Dr Balbir Singh and Patiala (urban) MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli joined the march and show their solidarity with the medico fraternity.

Dr Balbir Singh said “we want to express our solidarity with Dr. Archana Sharma. Every doctor and medical professional works with the goal of saving a life, not taking it.”
