Delhi Union of Journalists condemns invoking NSA against journalist Satyam Verma

“The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) condemns the Uttar Pradesh police’s decision to invoke provisions of the National Security Act (NSA), 1980 against senior journalist and editor of Mazdoor Bigul magazine Satyam Verma for raising the issues of workers in Noida and other parts of the country” said Sujata Madhok, president DUJ .
“Verma has been writing consistently about the problems of workers. The decision to invoke NSA against him is yet another example of attack against independent journalists. Since coming to power, the Yogi Adityanath Government has suppressed freedom of press and arrested journalists, including Siddique Kappan, invoking draconian laws. This must stop” said S.K.Pande, vice president, DUJ.
A.M. Jigeesh, general secretary DUJ added “DUJ reminds the Uttar Pradesh government that journalism is not a crime and our Constitution supports freedom of expression. We urge the government to withdraw the decision and free Verma at the earliest”.
We also condemn the misuse of NSA against activists including Akriti Chowdhury for their alleged role in the Noida protests.
“The Allahabad High Court has in the past pointed out the repeated misuse of NSA by the UP Police to arrest and jail citizens. This practice must stop” added DUJ spokesperson.
The Noida Police has invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against two accused Satyam Verma (60 years old) and Akriti (25 years old) over their role in workers protests that took place on April 13,2026
