World University organises poetry recitation competition
Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University’s Department of English organised an Intra university poetry recitation competition for the students of the University. Over 40 students from various departments of the University participated in the competition.
Giving more information about the competition, Dean Languages and Head of the Department of English, Dr. Swaraj Raj said that competitions like these help the students to express themselves freely and are also instrumental in building their confidence. He told that the department had invited Prof. Ashok Sood and In-Charge of Department of Punjabi of the University, Dr. Sikander Singh as judges.
The students recited poems in both English and Punjabi and the themes ranged from social evils, education, religion, romance, drug addiction to political commentary as well. Prof. Ashok Sood while giving his judgement about the competition said the poetry comes straight from the heart and the more one emotes, the better poet he becomes.
Dr. Sikander Singh was of the view that poetry is much more than just a medium for political and social commentaries. He said that the poetry is a powerful medium to express complex set of human emotions.
The competition was won by Rasneek Kaur, student Department of Chemistry while Kiranpreet Kaur from Department of Punjabi secured second position. The third position was jointly held by Manjot Kaur from Department of Physiotherapy and Harkirat Singh from the Department of Commerce. In the end, Ankdeep Kaur thanked the guests and participants for making this competition a roaring success and said that the department will continue to organise such events in the future as well.
