World university organized special lecture on Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji: Life and Personality

A Special Event was organized by the Department of Sri Guru GranthSahib Religious Studies at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib. The theme of the event was “Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji: Life and Personality” and also a panel discussion was organized on the book edited by Dr. Hardev Singh, Assistant Professor, on eighteenth-century poetry by Bhai Sukkha Singh “Sri Gurbilas Patshahi Dasvin

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Prit Pal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University to commemorate Sri Guru GobindJi’s Prakash Purab. Dr. Singh said that Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jiestablished the ideals of equality and independence through the creation of the Khalsa Panth, where, “Sri Gurbilas Patshahi Dasvin” is a very good source for understanding. He added that traditional texts should be understood in their contemporary context. Professor Balkar Singh, Director, World Punjabi Center, Punjabi University, Patiala presenting his views on “Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji-Life and Personality” said that the creation of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji is in fact the pinnacle of the concept of truth given by Sri Guru Nanak DevJi. Appreciating the efforts of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, he said that it was the duty of the Sikh academi to convey the message of Gurmat to the world.

Introducing the discussion, Dr. Sikander Singh, Dean Student Welfare of the University on the art of editing of Hardev Singh the book “Sri Gurbilas Patshahi Dasvin” said that Dr. Hardev Singh, in addition to editing this volume, has presented the ideas in the context of contemporary religious, social, political and literary conditions, making it easier to understand the Granth more precisely. Dr. Makhan Singh said that the editor has highlighted the multifaceted importance of ‘Sri Gurbilas Patshahi’ for Sikhism through references to national and international scholars in presenting text in the context of ‘Sikh tradition’. He said that in our time, the suspicions that arise regarding these ancient texts are due to lack of interest in reading. Reading a stanza separately from its entire context causes problems.

Dr. Swaraj Raj, Dean Faculty Languages welcomed the visiting guests and made them aware of the theme of the discussion. Dr. Kirandeep Kaur, in-charge, Department of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Religious Studies thanked the scholars who attended the event. Among others, Deputy Registrar, Dr. Balwinder Kaur, Assistant Registrar, Amandeep Kaur and in-charge of various departments, professors and students were also present there.
