World University Teacher gets Patent in Biotechnology

Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib added another feather to its cap as Dr Pushpender Kumar Sharma from Department of Biotechnology has been awarded a patent in India for engineering a protein for its industrial applications. The title of this patent is ‘Engineering of metagenome derive lipase’. Dr Sharma told that this protein can be a prototype for biochemist and structural biologists to engineer thermostable proteins. These types of thermostable mutant proteins are sought in various industries that include detergents, oil industry, pharmaceutical, leather, and food processing industries.

The study was carried out by him with Prof. Jagdeep kaur of Chandigarh, and Dr Ranvir Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Human Genome Research,Panjab University, Chandigarh. The patent was filed in year 2010 and was awarded in 2018 this year.

It is noteworthy that Department of Biotechnology at World University under the headship of Prof. C. Rajesh, a post doctorate from USA, in short span of time has got number of achievements and has established itself as renowned department in the region.Seven students from this Department has already got admission for Ph.D. at top university of USA and Canada with full scholarships. Several other students have been recruited by various companies that include the ten students by ‘Verka’, twenty students in ‘Paraxel Company’.

It is worth mentioning here that every faculty in theDepartment has received funds from funding agency like Science and Engineering Research Board, New Delhi for doing research in frontier area of Biological sciences. Darbara Singh Guru, member secretary, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Centenary Memorial Trust, Prof. Sukhdarshan Singh Khehra, Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Prof. Pritpal Singh, Registrar of the university congratulated Dr. Pushpender K. Sharma. Authorities informed that University has always encouraged research in the frontier areas of science and technology and will keep on doing it in future also.
