42 percent increase in budgetary outlay to give new momentum to transport sector: Bhullar

Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar today said that the budgetary outlay of Rs.567 crore for the transport sector, which is an increase of 42 percent over financial year 2022-23, will give a new momentum to the efforts being made by the state government for transforming the Transport sector.

Thanking Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for paying special attention to the transport sector, Laljit Singh Bhullar said that the state government will spend Rs.35 crore for the establishment/up-gradation of 28 bus stands in a phased manner, while Rs.48 crore has been allocated for the Punjab State Road Safety Fund Keeping in mind the protection of precious lives.

Listing another budgetary allocation to launch Integrated Depot Management System (IDMS) in all depots of PRTC and Punjab Roadways, the Cabinet Minister said that it will further streamline the working of the public transport department. He said that six Automotive Testing Stations at Sahibzada Ajit Singh (SAS) Nagar, Patiala, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Faridkot and Amritsar will be established on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis to conduct the fitness of commercial vehicles with Ultra-Modern Equipments.

Apart from this, the Transport Minister said that major reforms in the transport sector have been initiated. The government has duly approved and recently notified the Punjab Electric Vehicle Policy to promote the use of electric vehicles. The government has implemented the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility for scrapping of old vehicles. The tentative sites for setting up Scrapping Facility have been identified and would be made functional in FY 2023-24.
