Member of legislative assembly, Punjab from Kapurthala belonging to the Congress party Rana Gurjeet Singh today called upon the people of Punjab to take pledge to conserve energy in the form of electrical power for a brighter and progressive future for the upcoming generations.

He said this on the eve of national energy conservation day (falling on December 14). According to him, electricity is a national asset and saving it is like performing fundamental duty as contributing towards the economic development of the nation. “So it becomes moral duty of all citizens of the nation to save electricity and contribute towards the nation’s development,” he reiterated.

Sharing that each unit saved is 1.25 units generated, Rana Gurjeet Singh said people should make energy consumption more ethical by making conscious choices. He said that lowering energy consumption will have a positive impact not only on the individual finances but will also help in nation-building.

Per unit cost of power for industry is Rs 5.40 to 7.17, for commercial Rs 6.37, domestic Rs. 6.32 and for agriculture sector is Rs 6.83.

Exhorting the citizens to save electricity, he said there are more than one crore power consumers in Punjab and if a single unit of power is saved by each consumer on a daily basis, it can translate into massive savings in form of power and economically also.

“When the governments are already paying huge power subsidies which translates into hundreds of crore rupees on the exchequer, it becomes more prudent for the consumer to use electricity judiciously. The saving will directly benefit the governments and funds hence saved can be diverted for the larger good of the people,” suggested the MLA.

He asked the people to shift to renewable methods of generation power such as installing solar panels and using solar cookers. “In North India we have abundant solar power available from the sun, almost 280 days in a year so with little effort and making very small expenditure we can channelize this energy”, the legislator appealed to the consumers.
