The 21st Livestock Census, initiated under the directives of the Punjab Government, is currently in progress in Patiala district. The Animal Husbandry Department is conducting a comprehensive enumeration of 16 different breeds of livestock and poultry across the district.
Dr. Gurdarshan Singh, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry, Patiala, stated that this is the second digital livestock census since 2019. Data collection, including details about livestock breeds and their unique characteristics, is being carried out using a specialized mobile app. To ensure the smooth execution of this large-scale survey, the department has deployed 22 supervisors and 111 enumerators who are visiting households in approximately 1,225 villages and 165 wards.
For the first time, pet dogs are being included in the census, categorized by breed. Additionally, livestock housed in gaushalas (cow shelters) and those owned by nomadic tribes are being recorded separately. The census also aims to gather insights into farmers’ reliance on the animal husbandry sector, as well as data on poultry and the tools used in livestock management.
