During the Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024–25, a quantity of 173.41 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of paddy has been procured under the Central Pool in the State of Punjab. This is equivalent to approximately 117 LMT of rice. Out of this, around 92 LMT of rice has already been delivered to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) as of 05.06.2025. Currently, rice is being accepted at an average rate of 0.5 LMT per day, and it is expected that around 15 LMT will be accepted by the end of June 2025. Consequently, the remaining 10 LMT is expected to be delivered by the end of July 2025.
To facilitate stock management, FCI has moved out 15 LMT and 23 LMT of foodgrains in April and May 2025, respectively. Additionally, a movement plan of 29 LMT (comprising 14 LMT and 15 LMT of rice) has been scheduled for June 2025.
In preparation for rice acceptance during this season, FCI has also hired approximately 20 LMT of covered storage space from State Agencies. This space, previously used for wheat storage, is being repurposed to support rice procurement and storage requirements.
Similarly, during the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2025–26, 119 LMT of wheat has been procured under the Central Pool in Punjab without any disruption, and the entire quantity has been lifted from the mandis. FCI has already dispatched 17 LMT of wheat by the end of May 2025, and an additional 15 LMT is planned for June 2025.
The Government of India and FCI are making all necessary and concerted efforts to ensure proper accommodation of the current wheat and rice stocks. In addition to ongoing foodgrain movement, significant steps are being taken to augment covered storage capacity in Punjab. The Government of India has already sanctioned the creation of 60 LMT of new covered storage capacity, which will be constructed in the coming years.
These comprehensive measures are aimed at ensuring the smooth procurement and storage operations in Punjab in the current and upcoming seasons.
