United Sikhs runs relief operations in flood affected areas of Punjab

The United Sikhs, a United Nation (UN) affiliated U.S. based advocacy group is actively running flood relief works at different places in Punjab since August 13, when the flood waters first entered the fields in areas of Ferozepur districts.
Now the relief works by our organization is operating relief camps in Ajanala, Dera Baba Nanak, Ramdas, Gurdaspur and Ferozepur,” said Amritpal Singh who represent the advocacy group in Punjab and is coordinating the flood relief works.
“We have evacuated thousands of families from the marooned villages to safer places particularly to the Gurdwaras, Dharamshalas and community centre and also providing cooked langar,” said Amritpal Singh who adds that round the clock nearly a dozen boats are operation to evacuate the villagers who are stuck in floodwater which is as high as 15 feet in some parts of the affected areas. He adds that flood situation is really bad as the villagers are saying that it is even worse than the foods of 1988.
“Our focus now is to support evacuation, provide medicine and freshly cooked food,” said Devinder Singh a volunteer of United Sikhs working in Ferozepur. “We are waiting for the floodwaters to recede once it comes down our focus would be provide soaps, detergents, mosquito repellents and mosquito nets because after water recedes there is apprehension of outbreak of the epidemics which even could be serious than the floods,” said Amritpal Singh.
The United Sikhs according to its volunteers in Dera Baba Nanak have also arranged defogging machines which will be required to spray the insecticides to check breeding of mosquitoes and other insects.
According to Amritpal Singh all the groups of United Sikhs working across the nations have been activated for the cause of Punjab and Punjabis. Most of our volunteers in different countries are Sikhs and Punjabis who are supporting the human population in the event of a natural calamity anywhere in the world and for all of them Punjab always has been on a top priority.
“We have a plan and material arranged to support the farmers for de-silting of their agriculture lands after the entire water recedes and percolates, we will provide diesel and seeds of the rabi crops to the farmers,” further informed Amritpal Singh.
