Punjab Water Resources Department Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal today laid the foundation stone of the boulder revetment to be installed along the river bank at village Shahpur Bela in Block Nurpur Bedi, accepting the demand of Rupnagar constituency MLA Advocate Dinesh Chadha.

This project, being constructed at a cost of approximately Rs. 15 crore 68 lakh, aims to protect the villages located along the river from floods during the rainy season and to prevent riverbank erosion.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal said that several villages in the Nurpur Bedi block are located close to the Sutlej River and therefore face the threat of floods every year during the rainy season. Hence, the government is making permanent arrangements such as boulder revetment to strengthen the riverbanks. He said that under this scheme, large stones will be placed along the riverbanks to build strong embankments so that river erosion can be stopped and water does not move towards villages and agricultural fields.

Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal said that in the past period, Punjab had faced the biggest flood situation since 1988. During that time, some other states had also refused to take excess rainwater, due to which the situation became even more serious in several areas of Punjab.

He said that the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann worked day and night during that difficult time and made large-scale efforts to safely evacuate people and reduce losses. He informed that after the flood situation, the government formed teams of experts and conducted a detailed survey of riverine areas across Punjab. Based on this survey, wherever the need was felt, projects for embankments, boulder revetments and other protective arrangements were prepared and work was started.

On this occasion, constituency MLA Advocate Dinesh Chadha thanked Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal and said that the people of Nurpur Bedi and surrounding riverine villages have been struggling with the problem of floods for a long time. He said that due to the impact of Bhakra Dam and the Sutlej River, many villages in the area suffer from floods every year and people have to bear significant losses.

He said that the entire area falls in the riverine belt and these villages are the most affected during floods. Therefore, this multi-crore boulder revetment project approved by the government will prove to be a major relief for the area.

MLA Chadha thanked Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Cabinet Minister Barinder Singh Goyal and said that this project will help in preventing river erosion and ensure the safety of people’s lives, property and agricultural land during the rainy season.

He also said that if similar work is required in other villages of the area in the future, he will bring the matter to the attention of the government so that more projects can be introduced for the safety of the people.
