In a landmark step towards India’s renewable energy future, Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, inaugurated the 11.5 MW Ground mounted solar power projects at Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB)’s Bhiwani and Hisar substations today. The prestigious ceremony was graced by Worthy Chairman BBMB, Er. Manoj Tripathi, Member (Power) & Chief Engineer/Generation Er. Jagjeet Singh, Chief Engineer/System Operation Er. Harpreet Singh Manocha, and Chief Engineer/Transmission System Er. Surjeet Singh.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board, under the Government of India, has long been a pillar of reliable hydroelectric power and equitable water distribution for partner states Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh fueling socio-economic growth through irrigation and affordable energy. Embracing the renewable revolution, BBMB has now illuminated its path into solar energy with these state-of-the-art projects, developed at a cost of Rs 53.50 crore (Rs 4.61 crore/MW) on vacant substation land.
Comprising a 10 MW plant at Bhiwani (evacuated at 132 kV) and a 1.5 MW plant at Hisar (evacuated at 33 kV), equipped with over 25,648 high-efficiency 550 Wp photovoltaic modules (19% efficiency) and advanced inverters, they promise a Capacity Utilisation Factor (CUF) of around 21%, generating approximately 21 million units of clean electricity annually.

The power will flow to partner states per existing shares: Haryana (5.094 MW), Punjab (2.84 MW), and Rajasthan (2.61 MW), bolstering their Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) and slashing about 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly. This not only greens the grid but advances India’s ambitious 500 GW clean energy target.
Er. Manoj Tripathi, Chairman BBMB, remarked, “These projects exemplify BBMB’s commitment to sustainability, transforming unused land into a powerhouse of green energy for generations.”
