Former Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities and Member of the BJP National Parliamentary Board, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, has expressed serious concern over recent actions of the local administration regarding a matter linked to Sikh heritage in Attapur, Hyderabad.

In this regard, Lalpura has written a letter to the Chief Minister of Telangana. In his letter, he stated that the presence of Sikhs in this region dates back to 1832 to 1834, when Maharaja Ranjit Singh, upon the request of the Nizam of Hyderabad, deputed Sikh contingents to maintain law and order. These soldiers were settled near Mir Alam Tank, where their descendants, now over 1,200 families, have been residing peacefully for nearly two centuries.

Over the years, the Sikh community has established Gurudwaras, schools, and other social institutions on this land. Official records and recommendations by the District Collector and senior revenue authorities have acknowledged their long standing possession and supported regularization of residential areas at nominal rates, and religious and educational institutions free of cost.

The High Court of Telangana has also, in multiple orders, directed the State authorities not to interfere with the peaceful possession of the Sikh community and to take appropriate steps toward regularization of the land.

Despite this, the recent demolition of fencing erected to protect the sacred Nishan Sahib land and the registration of an FIR against members of the community have caused serious concern and distress among the Sikh community. These actions are being seen as contrary to established facts, official recommendations, and judicial directions.

Lalpura termed these developments as highly unfortunate and avoidable, especially considering the Sikh community’s long standing tradition of peaceful coexistence and contribution to the region.

He has urged the Government of Telangana to:

  • Ensure immediate protection of the land and religious sites
  • Implement the High Court orders in letter and spirit
  • Withdraw the FIR registered against community members
  • Restore the demolished fencing around the sacred Nishan Sahib
  • Expedite the process of land regularization as per earlier recommendations

He further stated that this issue is not merely about land, but about honouring historical commitments, protecting minority rights, and upholding the rule of law.

Lalpura expressed confidence that the Government will act promptly to restore trust and ensure justice.
